Des Foley – Irish based Photographer, Videographer and Racing Driver/Instructor.
- Education and Work
I studied BSc. Music, Media and Performance Technology at the University of Limerick from 2007 – 2011. After Graduating I moved to Galway to pursue work as a Photographer. Since then my clients have included names such as Budweiser, Heineken, Murphy Prototypes and a large selection of bands and artists. I also work part time as a instructor at the Mondello Park Race School.
- Nissan GT Academy
In August 2012 I took part in GT Academy, an international driver search that takes the fastest Gran Turismo gamers in the world and turns them into racing drivers. I beat off almost 1 million hopefuls to make the final 6 and represented the UK & Ireland in the European final. I was extremely proud of how far I had gotten but obviously very disappointed that the dream was over after 2 and a half years of dedication to the cause. Nonetheless, it opened some new doors and I moved on.
- European Le Mans Series
In 2013 and 2015 I created photo, video and social media content for endurance race team Murphy Prototypes. This work took me all over Europe with the highlight being the 24 hours of Le Mans, the biggest motor race in the world. It is every racing drivers dream to take part in this event, so to see if from the inside with full access was a wonderful learning experience.
- Budweiser Dream Job
In August 2013 I heard about a competition called the Budweiser Dream Job. I put together a strong entry and made the final 5. Then a public vote would take place over 2 weeks to decide the winner. It was an extremely tough time but I was able to get enough people on my side and in September I was announced as the winner of the competition. The prize was €45,000 to help me pursue my dream career as a photographer, videographer and editor.
- Irish Formula Vee ‘Finol Star of Tomorrow’ Champion 2015
2015 was my first full season of Motor Racing and I competed in the Irish Formula Vee Championship. I won my class and was crowned the Finol Star of Tomorrow which lead to a driver in the Leastone F1000 single seater at the Oulton Park round of the UK Monoposto Championship. Videos of all my races can be viewed on my Youtube channel.
- Race of Champions
In November 2015 I was given the opportunity to replace Moto GP Champion Jorge Lorenzo at the Race of Champions event at the Olympic Stadium in London. To get this chance I was first selected by a panel of judges and then a public vote where 7,500 people got behind me. I got the chance to compare my driving skills to Formula 1, Le Mans and World Rally Stars, even managing to beat 4-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel on the skills challenge course.
